Certificate in Geriatric and Disability Care (Level 4)

The program will cover a wide range of topics including but not limited to:

  • > Understanding the aging process and its impact on physical and mental health.
  • > Effective communication strategies with elderly individuals, persons with disabilities (PwD), and their families.
  • > Managing chronic illnesses and age-related conditions.
  • > Providing assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) and personal care.
  • > Maintaining a safe and supportive environment for elderly individuals and PwD.
  • > Legal and ethical considerations and cultural sensitivity.
  • > Palliative care
  • > Dementia care
  • > Basic anatomy and physiology
  • > Work health and safety including infection control

Course Content:

The curriculum is based on the nationally recognised Australian qualification CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability).

The course will contain the following subjects:

  • > Provide individualised support
  • > Facilitate the empowerment of people receiving support
  • > Support independence and wellbeing
  • > Recognise healthy body systems
  • > Communicate and work in health or community services
  • > Work with diverse people
  • > Work legally and ethically
  • > Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control
  • > Follow safe work practices for direct client care
  • > Provide support to people living with dementia
  • > Work effectively in aged care
  • > Deliver care services using a palliative approach
  • > Contribute to ongoing skills development using a strengths-based approach
  • > Support community participation and social inclusion
  • > Work effectively in disability support

Target Audience:

Our training program is suitable for a wide range of participants including:

  • > Candidates who are over 18 years of age. Preferably 21 years and above
  • > Candidates who passed 12th standard or equivalent
  • > Candidates who are proficient in English and/or Hindi or Tamil or Telugu
  • > Healthcare professionals (nurses, allied health professionals, dentists, doctors) who may want to migrate to Australia or find jobs in other countries (Medium of instruction will be in English)
  • > Healthcare professionals (nurses, allied health professionals, dentists, doctors) who may want to upskill or engage in professional development
  • > Caregivers and home health aides
  • > Staff working in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and hospice care
  • > Community volunteers and individuals interested in pursuing a career in geriatric care and/or disability care

Duration:

Full-time: Three months (13 weeks)
Part-time: Six months (26 weeks)

Students will be provided a timetable for online and face-to-face sessions. Attendance is mandatory for all face-to-face sessions.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):

Students who have prior knowledge and work experience in the content covered in the various modules can apply for RPL and get exemption for those modules. Students will have to submit an RPL application along with appropriate evidence to prove that they have the prior knowledge and work experience in those subjects.

RPL will reduce the duration of the course.
